Seismic vulnerability assessment of multi storey reinforced concrete Frame buildings with masonry in

M.Mouzzoun, O.Moustachi, A.Taleb

In the most countries situated in seismic regions especially in Morocco, reinforced concrete frame buildings are infilled by brick or concrete-block masonry walls. In Moroccan seismic code RPS2000, infill walls are considered as non-structural elements and their contribution and influence on the seismic response are ignored in the design. In the present study, the seismic behavior of multistory reinforced concrete frame with masonry infill is investigated using the strut model to capture the global effects of the infill. Nonlinear pushover analysis has been used to evaluate to seismic response. An equivalent strut model has been used for masonry infill. Numerical simulations are conducted using SAP2000 in which the behavior law of the strut was implemented. The results of numerical simulations show that the infill walls have a strong influence on the seismic response and ignoring their effects is not on the safe side. They should be considered in the seismic design and analysis of buildings with masonry infills.

Comparative Performance Analysis of a Grid Connected System during Fault Occurrence: STATCOM V/S SVC

Shaifali Jain

Voltage Constancy is a strategic factor for the unwavering activity of a grid connected system during fault imposition and grid disturbances. This paper investigates the implementation and comparison of devices like STATCOM and SVC for the voltage stability issue for grid connected systems. The system model is simulated in MATLAB / SIMULINK and the results show that the STATCOM is better than SVC for the stable operation of a grid connected system to remain in service during grid faults.

Improving the Performance of the Naphtha Stabilizer in the Refinery Plant

Ahmed Raheem Hashim and Ala’a Abdulrazaq Jassim

In this study, theoretical investigations have been made concerning naphtha stabilizer column at the Basra refinery. The main objective of the naphtha stabilizer distillation is to separate the light ends and LPG product from the reformate product. The naphtha stabilizer was subjected to simulation and optimization to find the optimum operating conditions by using Aspen HYSYS V7.1 and MATLAB (R2008a) program. A steady state simulation model is utilized to study the behavior of multi-component nonideal mixture in the naphtha stabilizer distillation. A procedure has been introduced to build up a mathematical model and simulation for a naphtha stabilizer based on the MESH equations. The set of algebraic equations are solved by using tridiagonal matrix method. The simulation model was subjected to the validity test by comparing the simulation results with the HYSYS simulation results. The validity test shows a great similarity and reliability for simulation model where it was highly accurate and very close to HYSYS simulation results, where the ABS deviation was(<0.014). Optimization results shows that, it’s possible to increase the recovery of C5+ in the reformate from 97 % in actual unit to 99.6 %, also the reformate production increases about (2.383%) from the actual reformate production by changing the design variables and operating conditions. HYSYS process modeling software was used to analyze the effect of reflux ratio, feed temperature, column pressure, column efficiency, condenser cooling duty and reboiler heating duty on the recovery of C5+ in the reformate and the reformate production naphtha stabilizer distillation column.

Hybrid Multi-Port Converter Based Electric Vehicles Using Renewable Energy with Microcontroller

B.J. Jayareshma, N. Preethi and N. Kumar

This paper presents to design a hybrid multiport converter using renewable energy sources applied in electric bike. The renewable energy sources used as input to the multiport converter include solar energy, chemical energy from fuel cell and battery. The renewable energy source input is used in order to obtain high fuel economy, low emissions and silent operation. The hybrid multiport converter serves as a bi-directional converter within the electric bike. The cascaded structure of buckboost converter, transfers the energy stored in battery of a driving motor in the braking mode, and recycles the energy as a result of the Back Electromotive Force (BEMF) in order to charge battery in the operation mode. Moreover, the proposed converter can also serve as a charger by directly connected to AC line. All the experimental results are used to demonstrate the performance of the vehicle via Regenerative Braking system where the energy being utilized is allowed to be stored in the battery or ultra-capacitor. The PIC 16F882 microcontroller is utilized for controlling the gate driver circuit within the hybrid multiport converter and also deals with the switching modes of energy within the battery. The State of Charge (SOC)estimation helps the proposed converter to serve as a charging battery.

A Model of Wind Energy Source using Simlink/Matlab

Manjay Lal and H.P. Agarwal

This paper represents the modern investigation on incredible wind energy in real world. Our life is directly related to energy and its consumption. So the issues of energy research are extremely important and highly sensitive. After making a detailed preliminary analysis of biomass energy, geothermal energy, ocean thermal energy, tidal energy and wind energy, it has been found that wind energy has the attractive attribute that the fuel is free and this will be the case for the project lifetime and beyond. Wind energy conversion systems have become point of interest in the research of renewable energy sources as the conventional energy sources are not sufficient to meet the growing requirements of the generations. Wind energy systems for irrigation and milling have been in use since ancient times and since the beginning of the 20th century it is being used to generate electric power. As the result of extensive studies, wind energy has recently been applied in various industries, and it has become the one of the powerful energy source. In this paper, wind energy is reviewed and its stochastic structure, meteorology, merits, demerits are discussed. Also we have designed the model of wind energy generation using SIMLINK/MATLAB.
